In this post, we review Dr. Angela Lauria’s Book Journeys interview with author Alka Dalal, an Internet marketer and author of Creative Genius, TIPS to Unleash Yours, which is her first published book.
In the interview, Alka mentioned that the idea for her to write a book came about during a period of soul-searching. She had attended several seminars, written several articles and earned some degrees in college, always using her creativity in whatever she did. The idea then came for her to write a book on creativity, which would enable people to use easily.
Alka revealed that, even before she started writing the book, she had already envisioned herself as an author, and this is something that she stated was important in the process of becoming one, as this is what can enable them to properly plan things out. In the latter regard, Alka mentioned that she had set a timeline for herself and followed it.
Alka mentioned the importance of systems in her life, and gave the example of how she created a network with little time and money, wherein she held potluck parties and involved her children, so that these wouldn’t be all over the place; and one of the parts of the system she had created were taking notes – such as the menus used for such parties – for future reference. Alka mentioned that the network came in handy, as its members could seek each others’ help for their problems, such as job hunting. Such systems also helped her keep to her timeline, even when such interruptions as writer’s block (which, she says, can hit anyone) hit her; in that instance, she would go out and read a new book to get the creative juices flowing once again.
With regards to ideas, Alka recommended putting these down somewhere – a piece of paper, an iPhone – as soon as possible, after an idea comes, for future reference. She also mentioned one of the tips in her book, which was to never stop learning.
Alka also mentioned that she wanted to self-publish from the start, as traditional publishing methods take up to two years to produce a book, and she wanted to publish her book as soon as she was done editing it. The website she chose was createspace.com, and she found that the website’s support personnel could answer all of her queries related to self-publishing on that website.
Alka revealed that the book is now her calling card and it has affected lots of people. One of these is an eighty-five year old woman whom Alka is coaching so the latter can create her first book based on all the blogs that she had written.
