By taking the time to self-edit and hire professional help when needed, you can ensure that your self-published book is one that readers will enjoy. Once the manuscript is completed and has been edited, you can expect to see your book listed for sale online and in bookstores relatively quickly. Depending on the printing process and demand for the book, it may take a few weeks or months for your book to become available for purchase. The traditional publishing process allows a significant amount of time to elapse between submitting the completed manuscript and publishing the book. This time is important for final edits, proofing, and tweaks that prepare your book for publication. On average, traditional publishers take about eighteen months to complete this process.
No Approval Needed
Agents and publishers are creatures of habit who stick to what they know. They’re often reluctant to take a chance on new authors whose work falls outside the genres or parameters that people currently favor. This lack of willingness to experiment can make it difficult for fresh voices to break into the publishing world. Self-publishing gives anyone who wants to be an author the opportunity to do so without having to go through a traditional publisher. This means that there are no gatekeepers, and anyone can publish their work. This can be a great way for people to get their work out there, but it also means that anyone can publish anything, regardless of quality.
Rights and Royalty Rates
There is no denying that publishing a book is difficult. This is especially true if the author is hoping to receive a sizable advance. The advances that some authors receive can be quite large, sometimes reaching six figures. However, the majority of writers will never see anything close to this amount of money for their work. Signing bonuses for new authors tend to be quite limited, generally not exceeding a few thousand dollars. This spending will need to be offset by book sales before any further royalty payments can be received.
Most traditional publishers only pay around $1 per book sold, whereas self-publishing authors can earn up to 70% royalties on each book sale. This means that, in terms of earning potential, self-published authors have the potential to make five times more than their counterparts who go the traditional publishing route. For authors who are looking to maximize their earnings, self-publishing is therefore the clear choice.
Once the author agrees to the terms and conditions of a publishing contract, they are giving up all ownership of their literary work. The publisher will then have the exclusive right to publish, distribute, and sell the work in any format. This means that the author will not be able to publish or distribute their work without permission from the publisher. This includes not only the book, but any version of the book, such as audiobooks, eBooks, and foreign language versions. The publisher now essentially owns the work, and the author has no say in what happens to it.
When you self-publish, you maintain complete control of your book. This includes the content, as well as all future rights and formats. You are free to make any changes you like, and no one can tell you what to do.

Finding an Audience
Bookstores are very much still a thing. People take great pleasure in leisurely browsing through bookstore shelves and physically flipping through the pages of books they might buy. There’s something special about the experience of being surrounded by stacks and stacks of books.
An increasing number of self-published books are now sold digitally. However, it is also possible to purchase in physical bookstores if the author has taken the necessary steps to make this happen. Having your book for sale in physical stores can give you more credibility as an author, but selling online is often more profitable and gives you a wider reach.
The next challenge for self-published authors is marketing their books. This can be a difficult task, as they are often the only ones promoting their work. Authors need to get creative and find ways to reach their target audience and may need to use social media, online advertising, and other methods to get the word out about their book.
