If you’re here, I know that deep inside of you lies a story that cannot be silenced and a message of wellness (physical, mental, spiritual, financial, business, relational, etc.) that needs to be shared. It needs to be heard by those you were called to lift out of dark places. You have honored that mandate thus far by writing a book and I have written this book to encourage you to honor it more fully by learning what it takes to sell 1,000 books in 21 days.

Most authors I speak to have a message that’s nearly bursting forth. They can’t help but share it, their passion won’t let them do anything but. The problem is that putting your message into words alone will never change lives. Once the message is packaged, it needs to be delivered (marketed) or the change you seek for those who struggle will never come to pass.

I wrote this book to give order to the many ideas shared with me at The Author’s Catapult 2014 Book Marketing Summit. There I interviewed 29 book marketing experts, bestselling authors and savvy digital marketers. They’ve collectively helped to sell MILLIONS and MILLIONS of books and I asked them “How would you sell 1,000 books in 21 days?”

As I reviewed each of the interviews multiple times I noticed patterns emerging. A thread ran through the interviews and it was all about relationships. These experts talked about relationships with partners, with prospects, with clients, with self and with money. It was quite wonderful how everything organized itself before my eyes.

I was hoping they would shed more light for me on how to have a successful book launch. I had done that before with a few clients and was excited to sponge up even more insider info! Instead, the bulk of the conversations centered in how to develop relationships pre-book launch that would essentially create your own distribution network.

So Selling Well is about building an author platform and the systems to support it and to make it thrive. Confidence that you have something that will better lives leads successful authors to get to know their audience in a deep meaningful way. If the sum of the first relationship is “know thyself,” the short of this one is “know your reader.” In relationship 2 we share hot tips for targeting your ideal reader.

Relationship 3: Your Marketing
While many experts have the first two relationships down, this is where some things start to break down. They know they want to get the word out and often they are trying so hard. They blog, they tweet, they tell people. But in the end it feels like an uphill battle. The relationship examined in Your Marketing is the one you have with partners, those who are speaking to your readers, those who already have built trust with the ones you want to speak to.
